Remembering Our Freedom
From the Community Spiritual Director, Chip Koch
As I write this article, it is on the heels of the 4th of July celebration – a time when we celebrate the many freedoms that we enjoy as citizens. While we take special note of our freedom, I can not help but wonder if we are as mindful of that freedom the rest of the year. Even in the midst of our celebration, do we remember the high price that has been paid for it? Too often we can slip into the mode of taking for granted that which we enjoy daily.
As I think about and celebrate the freedom we have as citizens of this country, I am also very much aware of an even greater freedom that we are extended as citizens of the Kingdom. I am mindful of the words of Jesus who said, “If the Son sets you free you are truly free (John 8:36).” Jesus is referencing the fact that in our sin we are slaves and have no freedom, but in Him we are truly set free to experience the abundant grace-filled life that God wants for each of us. We need to be careful that we do not forget the price that was paid for that freedom – namely Jesus’ death on the Cross.
The Emmaus Walk for me has always been a remarkable and unique tool that God uses to help His people remember, experience, and celebrate His grace, which sets us free. I give thanks for the blessed privilege that God gives us to share in that grace together as the Reynoldsburg Emmaus Community and for the opportunity to work with each of you. My prayer is that together we will continue to celebrate and share the grace of God in all that we do.
DeColores,
Chip Koch
